Types of Graphite Electrodes

 

You can find Graphite Electrodes in a variety of grades and types. Let us have a look at the common types that are currently available in the market:

 

Regular Power (RP) Graphite Electrodes
These electrodes are majorly used in the smelting of silicon and scrap steel. They do this in furnaces requiring ordinary power. They can withstand extremely high temperatures that are found in electric furnaces. They usually have a current density that is below 17A/cm².

 

Anti-Oxidation Coated Graphite Electrodes
This electrode has an anti-oxidant applied on its surface to act as a protective layer against oxidation. It also prevents the electrode from being consumed during the melting of metals. This coating also ensures that your graphite electrode consumes minimal energy. This will reduce your production and operational costs significantly.


High Power Graphite Electrode
These are the electrodes of choice when you are melting your metals in high-power electric furnaces. They can sustain current densities of between 18 A/cm² to 25 A/cm².

 

Ultra-High Power Graphite Electrode
The current density for these electrodes is usually anywhere past 25 A/cm². They are the electrode of choice when you’re operating an electric arc furnace that uses ultra-high power.

Making Graphite Electrodes

The process of manufacturing graphite electrodes begins with grinding the raw materials. The fine petroleum coke powder is then combined with a resin called tar that strengthens the graphite mixture.

 

This process ensures that the mixture is very pure with a consistent quality.

 

To ensure that the mixture is thoroughly compacted, it is vibrated at very high speeds. The formed graphite electrodes are then baked at 3000°C to form solid electrodes.

 

The baking process is called graphitization and is responsible for giving the electrodes its unique qualities. They can now be machined and custom-made to the client’s specifications to form the final product.

 

The final process is quality control whereby the standards are verified. Tests such as its electrical conductivity and density are carried out.
